Is collagen powder or capsules better? For the 10 to 15 g of collagen peptides a day used in most skin, joint and muscle trials, powder is better: one scoop delivers 10 to 20 g, while a capsule or tablet holds 0.25 to 1 g, so a capsule routine means 10 to 40 pills a day. No trial has compared the same collagen as a capsule and as a powder, so the real differences are dose and price, not absorption. We read the labels of ten collagen powders, capsules, tablets and gummies sold in the UK and the US on 23 October 2026. The powders cost 38p to £1.09 per 10 g of collagen in the UK and $0.79 to $1.02 in the US; most pills and gummies cost £1.39 or $1.92 to $2.27 per 10 g. Capsules earn their place for small, studied amounts, such as 40 mg of undenatured type II collagen or 2.5 g of VERISOL peptides.

Our Ultimate Collagen Peptides is a powder: one heaped scoop (18.2 g) supplies 15 g of BODYBALANCE® hydrolysed bovine collagen peptides, 40 mg of UC-II® undenatured chicken collagen, added glycine and 200 mg of vitamin C, with 30 servings in a 547 g tub. It costs £48.95 on our UK store (£1.09 per 10 g of collagen), or £44.06 on a subscription's first order, and an independent Eurofins test of batch 06500062 in July 2026 measured 198 mg of vitamin C per serving and lead below 0.05 mg/kg. Our capsule, Marine Collagen Skin Boost+, gives 500 mg of Cartidyss® marine collagen in two capsules for 62p a day. Neither is sold on our US store, and both carry our 60-day money-back guarantee.

Quick takeaways
  • Count the grams, not the pills. The capsules and tablets we checked hold 0.25 to 1 g of collagen each. A 10 g day takes 10 to 40 of them, or one scoop of powder.
  • Trial doses differ by ingredient. Generic and BODYBALANCE peptides were studied at 10 to 15 g a day [3] [4] [5]; VERISOL at 2.5 to 5 g [1] [2]; undenatured type II collagen at 40 mg [6] [7]. Match the format to the amount.
  • Powder is cheaper per gram. Powders ran 38p to £1.09 or $0.79 to $1.02 per 10 g; capsules and gummies mostly £1.39 or $1.92 to $2.27. NeoCell's 1 g tablets ($0.89) were the one exception.
  • Gummies bring sugar. Four Vital Proteins gummies give 2.5 g of collagen and 5 g of added sugar.
  • Check the extras. Collagen has no NRV or RDA in either market, but added vitamin C and biotin do, and one tablet brand gives 1,500 mcg of biotin a serving.

Collagen powder vs capsules vs gummies: the label table

The table sets ten products side by side, read from each brand's own product page and supplement facts panel on 23 October 2026. "Collagen per pill" is the labelled collagen per serving divided by the pills in that serving. Price per 10 g of collagen uses the one-off price of the size shown, divided by the total grams of collagen the pack declares. We have not converted any currency: UK products are priced in pounds and US products in dollars, as each brand sells them.

How much collagen do you need a day, and can capsules get you there?

There is no official daily amount for collagen in the UK or the US, so the useful guide is the amount used in trials, and that depends on the ingredient. Generic and branded hydrolysed peptides were studied at 10 to 15 g a day; VERISOL skin peptides at 2.5 to 5 g; undenatured type II collagen at 40 mg. Only the last two fit comfortably in a capsule routine.

Ingredient Daily amount in the trial What was studied Format that fits
VERISOL® bioactive collagen peptides 2.5 g or 5 g 69 women aged 35 to 55, 8 weeks: skin elasticity improved more than with placebo in both dose groups [1]; 114 women aged 45 to 65 took 2.5 g for 8 weeks and eye wrinkle volume fell more than with placebo [2] 3 to 4 tablets, 4 gummies, or a part scoop of powder
Collagen hydrolysate (generic) 10 g 147 athletes, 24 weeks, as a 25 ml liquid: several self-rated joint discomfort scores during activity fell more than with placebo [5] Powder or liquid; 10 to 18 capsules
BODYBALANCE® collagen peptides 15 g 53 men aged around 72 with low muscle mass, 12 weeks of resistance training: fat-free mass and leg strength rose more than with placebo [3]; 57 recreationally active young men, 12 weeks: fat-free mass rose more than with placebo [4] Powder
UC-II® undenatured type II collagen 40 mg 55 healthy adults who reported knee discomfort after a stair-climber test, 120 days: knee extension improved more than with placebo [6]; 191 adults with knee symptoms, 180 days [7] 1 capsule, or a small part of a powder blend
Hydrolysed collagen across 19 skin trials Varied by study A 2021 meta-analysis of 1,125 participants, 95% women, found better skin hydration and elasticity than placebo after around 90 days [8] Powder for the upper end; tablets for the lower end

These are trial results as the authors reported them, not a promise of any effect from any product, including ours. Several were run with the ingredient supplier, and they ran for 8 to 24 weeks. The pattern for a buyer is simpler: if the ingredient on your label was studied at 10 g or more, you will be taking powder or a lot of pills; if it was studied in milligrams, a capsule is the natural home for it.

For more on timing and amounts, see our collagen peptides dosage and timing guide and how long collagen peptides take to work.

Is collagen powder better than capsules?

Powder is better for amounts of 5 g or more, and capsules are fine for small amounts. The collagen itself does not change: a capsule is the same hydrolysed peptide powder in a shell, and no published trial has compared the same collagen in capsule and powder form, so any claim that one absorbs better than the other is not backed by a head-to-head study.

What is known about absorption applies to both. Hydrolysed collagen is digested into small peptides and amino acids, and collagen-derived peptides such as prolyl-hydroxyproline have been measured in human blood after people ate collagen hydrolysate [9]. That happens whether the peptides arrive in a capsule shell or stirred into coffee. The differences that matter are practical:

  • Dose per serving. In the products above, a capsule holds about half a gram of collagen. Vital Proteins' capsules hold 0.55 g each; Nutravita's marine tablets 0.6 g; NeoCell's large tablets 1 g. Powder has no ceiling: a scoop is 10 to 20 g.
  • What comes with it. Capsules and tablets add a shell (gelatin or HPMC) and often a flow agent such as magnesium stearate. Plain powders can be collagen and nothing else, as NeoCell's and Vital Proteins' unflavoured powders are.
  • Taste and mixing. Unflavoured hydrolysed collagen dissolves in hot or cold drinks with little taste, which removes most of the reason people choose pills. If you dislike any trace of taste in water, coffee or a smoothie hides it.
  • Travel. Capsules win here. A day's capsules fit in a pill box; a tub does not.

"When a client shows me a collagen capsule, the first thing I do is turn the tub over and work out the grams. Most capsules hold about half a gram, so a 10 g day means a handful of pills. If you are happy stirring a scoop into your morning coffee, powder is the simpler habit. If you travel a lot, a capsule of a low-dose ingredient can be the easier routine."

Are collagen pills a waste of money?

Not a waste, but usually a more expensive way to buy the same gram of collagen. On 23 October 2026 the four powders we compared cost 38p to £1.09 per 10 g of collagen in the UK and $0.79 to $1.02 in the US. The Vital Proteins capsules cost $2.07 per 10 g, about twice their own powder, and the gummies $2.27.

$0.79 vs $2.07Cheapest US powder vs Vital Proteins capsules, per 10 g of collagen
38p vs £1.39Nutravita powder vs Nutravita marine tablets, per 10 g of collagen
0.25 to 1 gCollagen per capsule or tablet across the six pills and gummies we checked
£1.09Our Ultimate Collagen Peptides per 10 g of collagen (98p on subscription), with 40 mg UC-II® included

Two exceptions are worth knowing. NeoCell's 1 g tablets cost $0.89 per 10 g, close to powder, because each tablet is large and carries a full gram. And low-dose specialist capsules, ours included, look very expensive per gram because you are not buying them for grams: Skin Boost+ costs £12.32 per 10 g of collagen, but at its label amount of two capsules a day it is 62p a day for 500 mg of a specific type II marine peptide plus hyaluronic acid, vitamins C and E, biotin, silica and astaxanthin. Judge a specialist capsule on whether you want that formula at that amount, not on cost per gram.

Our own powder sits at the upper end of the powder range at £1.09 per 10 g, or 98p on subscription, because each scoop also carries 40 mg of UC-II® undenatured chicken collagen, added glycine and 200 mg of vitamin C, and the collagen is a named peptide (BODYBALANCE®) studied at the 15 g we use [3] [4]. If you want plain bovine collagen at the lowest price, Nutravita's powder at 38p per 10 g is cheaper in the UK and NeoCell's at $0.79 in the US. Our best collagen supplements comparison covers more powders on dose and cost.

Are collagen gummies as good as powder?

Gummies can deliver a studied peptide, but only at the low end of the trial range and with sugar. Vital Proteins Collagen Gummies give 2.5 g of VERISOL® peptides in four gummies, the amount used in VERISOL skin trials [1] [2], with 9 g of carbohydrate and 5 g of added sugar. Matching a 10 g scoop would take 16 gummies and 20 g of added sugar, which is not a sensible daily habit.

So gummies suit one buyer: someone who wants the lower VERISOL amount, will not take pills or powder, and is happy with a sweet. For anyone aiming at the 10 to 15 g used in joint and muscle trials, powder is the only format that gets there without a pile of pills or sweets. Liquid shots are a fourth option, covered in our liquid collagen vs powder guide.

What else is in collagen capsules? Vitamin C, biotin and reference intakes

Collagen has no Nutrient Reference Value (NRV) in the UK and no RDA or Daily Value in the US, which is why supplement facts panels show "Daily Value not established" beside it. The added vitamins do have reference intakes, and capsule and tablet formulas often lean on them. Here are the two that appear most in the products above, with each market's figures side by side.

Nutrient UK reference US reference In the products above
Collagen No NRV; no NHS daily amount No RDA, AI or Daily Value (NIH ODS has no collagen intake) 0.5 g to 20 g per serving
Vitamin C NRV 80 mg; NHS: adults 19 to 64 need 40 mg a day, and more than 1,000 mg a day can cause stomach pain and diarrhoea NIH ODS RDA 90 mg (men), 75 mg (women); upper limit (UL) 2,000 mg Ours 200 mg per scoop; NeoCell 60 mg per 6 tablets; Youtheory 45 mg per 3 tablets
Biotin NRV 50 µg; NHS: 0.9 mg (900 µg) or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm NIH ODS Adequate Intake 30 mcg; no UL set; high intakes can distort some blood test results Youtheory 1,500 mcg per 3 tablets; Skin Boost+ 150 µg per 2 capsules (per our product page)

Vitamin C has an authorised role here: it contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, cartilage and bones, which is why many collagen products add it. Our 200 mg per scoop is 250% of the UK NRV and well inside the US upper limit. Biotin is the one to add up. Youtheory's 1,500 mcg a serving is above the 0.9 mg the NHS describes as unlikely to cause harm, and the NIH notes that high biotin intakes can interfere with some laboratory tests, so tell whoever takes your blood if you use a high-biotin product.

One more label point: collagen is an incomplete protein. It is rich in glycine, proline and hydroxyproline but contains no tryptophan, which our own batch test confirmed (below 0.01 g per 100 g). It counts towards your protein intake but should not replace other protein foods. For a fuller explanation, see whether to take collagen or collagen peptides.

"I check the extras before the collagen. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, so it is a sensible partner, but vitamin C and biotin add up quickly if you already take a multivitamin or a hair, skin and nails product. Put every label side by side and total them before you add another."

Our batch data: what an independent lab measured in our collagen powder

We sent a retail tub of Ultimate Collagen Peptides, batch 06500062, to Eurofins in Hamburg in June 2026 and asked them to check it against our declared figures per 18.2 g serving. The report (AR-733-2026-00087334-03, issued 8 July 2026) is in our lab results library. Here is what it found, converted from the lab's per-100 g results to one serving.

Measure Our declared figure per serving Eurofins result per serving Read-out
Vitamin C 200 mg 198 mg (10,900 mg/kg) Matches
Glycine (total) 6.32 g 6.61 g (36.3 g/100 g) Within the lab's measurement uncertainty
Hydroxyproline 1.79 g 1.74 g (9.55 g/100 g) Within the lab's measurement uncertainty
Proline 1.89 g 2.35 g (12.9 g/100 g) Higher than declared
Tryptophan None expected (collagen has none) Below 0.01 g/100 g As expected for collagen
Lead / cadmium / mercury / arsenic n/a <0.050 / <0.010 / <0.005 / <0.10 mg/kg All below the lab's limit of quantification
Salmonella / E. coli n/a Not detected in 25 g / <10 cfu/g Clear

The amino acid figures are a useful identity check for any collagen: glycine, proline and hydroxyproline together made up 58.8 g per 100 g of our powder, the profile you expect from collagen and not from a cheaper protein. For our capsule, an independent report from Certified Laboratories on Marine Collagen Skin Boost+ batch S0624150 (November 2024) found lead at 0.028 ppm, cadmium 0.006 ppm, mercury 0.001 ppm and arsenic 0.082 ppm, with E. coli and Salmonella absent. Few collagen brands publish batch numbers with results, so if a brand you are considering does not, ask for a certificate of analysis before you buy.

Pick by what matters to you

You want the 10 to 15 g used in joint and muscle trials

Powder. In the UK, our Ultimate Collagen Peptides (15 g BODYBALANCE® plus 40 mg UC-II®) or Nutravita's plain powder for the lowest price; in the US, NeoCell or Vital Proteins unflavoured powder.

You will not take powder at all

Large tablets keep the count down: NeoCell's 1 g tablets reach 6 g in six. Expect 10 or more pills for 10 g with any brand.

You want a small, studied amount

A capsule or tablet built around a low-dose ingredient: 2.5 g of VERISOL® in three Youtheory tablets (check the biotin), or 40 mg of UC-II®. Our Skin Boost+ gives 500 mg of Cartidyss® in two capsules.

You want something sweet and simple

Gummies, accepting 2.5 g of collagen and 5 g of added sugar in four Vital Proteins gummies. Do not stack them to reach 10 g.

Which collagen format should you choose?

Choose by the amount you want to take, then by price. For most people buying collagen for skin, joints or training, that means an unflavoured powder that states its grams per serving, names its peptide where it can and publishes batch results. Choose capsules when the ingredient you want is studied in milligrams or a few grams, and choose gummies only if sugar is not a concern.

  1. Read the grams per serving. If the label gives collagen in milligrams per capsule, multiply by the daily capsules and compare with the trial amount for that ingredient.
  2. Work out the price per 10 g of collagen. Pack price divided by total grams of collagen, times 10. It strips out the effect of tub size and serving size.
  3. Check the source. Bovine, marine (fish) and chicken collagen suit different diets; none is vegetarian or vegan. Our marine vs bovine vs vegan guide covers the differences.
  4. Add up the extras. Total any vitamin C and biotin across everything you take, using the UK NRV or US RDA as a reference.
  5. Ask for the certificate. A batch number with heavy metal and microbiology results is the best evidence a collagen is what it says.

If you have questions about side effects or who should be careful, our guide to the downsides of collagen peptides sets out the evidence.

Frequently asked questions

Is collagen powder better than capsules?

For the 10 to 15 g a day used in most collagen peptide trials, yes: one scoop gives 10 to 20 g, while a capsule or tablet holds 0.25 to 1 g, so you would need 10 to 40 pills. No trial has compared the same collagen in both forms, so the difference is dose and cost, not absorption. Capsules make sense for ingredients studied in small amounts, such as 40 mg of undenatured type II collagen.

How many collagen capsules equal a scoop of powder?

Matching a 10 g scoop took 10 NeoCell tablets, 17 Nutravita marine tablets or 18 Vital Proteins capsules in the products we checked on 23 October 2026. A low-dose formula such as our Skin Boost+ would need 40 capsules, which is not how it is meant to be used.

Are collagen gummies as good as powder?

Only at low doses. Four Vital Proteins gummies give 2.5 g of VERISOL® peptides, the amount used in VERISOL skin trials, plus 5 g of added sugar. Reaching 10 g would take 16 gummies and 20 g of added sugar, so for higher amounts powder is the better route.

Are collagen pills cheaper than powder?

Usually not per gram. On 23 October 2026 the powders we compared cost 38p to £1.09, or $0.79 to $1.02, per 10 g of collagen; most capsules and gummies cost £1.39 or $1.92 to $2.27. NeoCell's 1 g tablets were the exception at $0.89 per 10 g.

What is the best form of collagen to take?

Hydrolysed collagen peptides, the form used in most skin, joint and muscle trials. Powder is the easiest way to take the 10 to 15 g those trials used; capsules suit small studied amounts such as 2.5 g of VERISOL® or 40 mg of UC-II®; gummies suit people who accept the sugar. Choose a label that states grams per serving and publishes batch results.
