Best Collagen for Women: Doses, Types and 7 Labels Compared
Love Life SupplementsThe best collagen for women is a hydrolysed collagen peptide (bovine or marine, types I and III) that gives a stated number of grams per serving inside the range the women's trials used, which is 2.5 to 15 g a day, with no sugar padding and a price per gram you can keep paying for months. For most women a powder is the practical choice, because one scoop gives 10 to 15 g, while capsules, tablets and gummies give about 0.5 to 0.8 g each. In the trials, 2.5 to 5 g a day was given for skin and nail measures in women aged 35 to 65, 5 g a day for 12 months for bone density in postmenopausal women, and 15 g a day alongside strength training in premenopausal women. Our pick for women who want the higher amount is our own Ultimate Collagen Peptides: 15 g of BODYBALANCE bovine collagen, 40 mg of UC-II and 200 mg of vitamin C in one unflavoured scoop, £1.63 a day on our UK store (£1.47 for a new subscriber). If 10 g a day is enough for you and you only want the lowest price, a plain bovine powder such as Nutravita's costs less (£0.38 a scoop), and we show both in the table below.
Our figures come from our printed label (UltimateBodybalanceCollagen, version 6). Love Life Supplements Ultimate Collagen Peptides gives 15 g of BODYBALANCE hydrolysed bovine collagen, 40 mg of UC-II undenatured chicken collagen and 200 mg of vitamin C (250% of the NRV) in an 18.2 g heaped scoop, with 13.5 g of protein, 0 g of sugar and 30 servings in a 547 g tub; the label lists collagen types I, II and III. An independent Eurofins test of batch 06500062 measured 6.64 g of glycine per serving against 6.32 g on the label, and vitamin C at 200 mg. It is made in the UK under BRC standards, costs £48.95 on our UK store (£44.06 for the first Subscribe & Save order), is covered by our 60-day money-back guarantee, and is not sold on our US store.

View collagen- Grams first. The women's trials used 2.5 to 15 g of hydrolysed collagen a day. A product that does not state its grams per serving cannot be checked against them.
- Bovine or marine both work as a source. Both supply mainly type I collagen (bovine also type III). What matters more is that it is hydrolysed into peptides and that the dose is stated.
- Powder gives the most per serving: 10 to 20 g a scoop in the products we read, against 0.55 to 0.85 g per capsule, tablet or gummy.
- No collagen has an authorised health claim in the UK or EU. Vitamin C does: it contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin, bones, cartilage, gums, teeth and blood vessels.
- Women over 50 were the group in the 12-month bone density trial (5 g a day). Protein needs do not fall with age, and collagen is an incomplete protein, so it adds to a protein-rich diet rather than replacing it.
- Price per 10 g of collagen ran from £0.38 to $2.27 across the seven products we compared. Ours is £1.09 (£0.98 on subscription).
What makes the best collagen for women?
The best collagen supplement for a woman is the one that gives a clearly stated, trial-sized amount of hydrolysed collagen in a form she will take every day for at least three months. Nothing about collagen is specific to women at the level of the molecule: "women's collagen" is a marketing label, and the peptides inside are the same bovine, marine or chicken collagen sold to everyone. What is specific to women is the research (most collagen trials recruited women) and the stage of life, because skin collagen content falls after the menopause.
We judged every product on this page on five things you can check on the label or the brand's own page:
- Grams of collagen per serving, stated as a number, not hidden in a proprietary blend.
- Form: hydrolysed collagen peptides (also sold as collagen hydrolysate), which is what the trials used.
- Source and type: bovine (types I and III) or marine (mainly type I), declared on the label.
- What else is in it: vitamin C is useful and carries an authorised claim; sugar, flavourings and high-dose extras are worth noticing.
- Price per serving and per 10 g of collagen, because collagen trials ran for 8 weeks to 12 months, so cost adds up.
Our wider ranking of collagen supplements on dose and cost is in best collagen supplements UK: 9 compared; this guide focuses on the questions women ask, from the dose in the women's trials to menopause and life after 50.
Best collagen for women: seven labels and prices compared
We read the supplement facts of seven collagen products widely bought by women in the UK and US, including our own, and worked out the price per serving and per 10 g of collagen from each brand's own listed price. The table is sorted by grams of collagen per serving.
| Product | Form and source | Collagen per serving | Vitamin C per serving | Price per serving | Price per 10 g collagen |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Unflavored | Powder, bovine | 20 g (4 tbsp) | None listed | $1.93 ($27.00, about 14 servings) | $0.96 |
| Love Life Supplements Ultimate Collagen Peptides | Powder, bovine (types I, II and III) with UC-II chicken collagen | 15 g + 40 mg UC-II | 200 mg | £1.63 (£48.95, 30 servings); £1.47 first subscription order | £1.09 (£0.98 subscribed) |

Competitor figures from each brand's own product page or supplement facts image (vitalproteins.com, neocell.com, youtheory.com, nutravita.com), read 23 October 2026 and re-read 30 October 2026. NeoCell's facts panel gives a 10 g serving and "about 20" servings for a 400 g tub, so we show both ways of counting. Our figures from our printed label; our prices read live from our UK store on 30 October 2026. Prices shown in the currency each brand sells in; we do not convert. Prices change; check before you buy.
What the table shows:
- Powders are the only way to reach 10 g or more in one serving. To get 10 g from the 1.2 g marine tablets you would need about 17 tablets; from the gummies, 16.
- Cheapest per gram is a plain powder. Nutravita (£0.38) and, by tub weight, NeoCell ($0.79) cost less per 10 g of collagen than ours (£1.09). Ours adds 200 mg of vitamin C and UC-II, and gives 15 g in one scoop.
- Low-dose formats are dosed for one ingredient's trials. The 2.5 g VERISOL products match the 2.5 g used in the skin and nail studies of that ingredient, and nothing more.
- Gummies carry sugar. The Vital Proteins gummies list 5 g of added sugar for 2.5 g of collagen.
- Biotin is not needed by most women. Youtheory adds 1,500 mcg, 30 times the 50 mcg NRV. High-dose biotin can distort some blood tests, including thyroid and heart tests, so tell your doctor if you take it.13

Which type of collagen is best for women: bovine or marine, type I or III?
For a daily supplement, bovine and marine collagen peptides are both reasonable choices for women; neither has been shown to beat the other in a head-to-head trial. Both are rich in the same three amino acids (glycine, proline and hydroxyproline) and both are digested into small peptides and amino acids before they are absorbed. The practical differences are source, price and diet:
- Bovine collagen (from cowhide) supplies types I and III, the two main types in skin. It is usually the cheaper of the two per gram.
- Marine collagen (from fish skin or scales) is mainly type I. It suits pescatarians and anyone who avoids beef, costs more per gram, and must be avoided by anyone with a fish allergy.
- Type II collagen (usually from chicken cartilage) is a different product. Undenatured type II, such as UC-II, is taken in milligrams, not grams, and is studied for joints rather than skin. Ours contains 40 mg of UC-II on top of the 15 g of bovine peptides.
- "Multi collagen" blends mix several sources (often bovine, fish, chicken and eggshell membrane). The more sources, the smaller each one's share, and the label rarely says how much of each.
- Vegan collagen does not exist. Products sold as "vegan collagen" contain amino acids and vitamins meant to help your own collagen production, not collagen.
More on the sources in marine vs bovine vs vegan collagen.
How much collagen should a woman take a day?
The trials in women used 2.5 to 15 g of hydrolysed collagen peptides a day, taken daily for 8 weeks to 12 months. The amount depends on what was measured: 2.5 to 5 g in skin and nail studies, 5 g in a bone density study and 15 g alongside strength training. There is no official recommended intake for collagen in the UK or the US, because it is not an essential nutrient: your body makes it from the amino acids in the protein you eat.
| Trial | Who took part | Daily dose and length | What was measured |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proksch 2014 (skin)1 | 69 women aged 35 to 55 | 2.5 g or 5 g, 8 weeks | Skin elasticity higher than placebo in both dose groups; moisture and water loss did not reach significance |
| Proksch 2014 (VERISOL)2 | 114 women aged 45 to 65 | 2.5 g, 8 weeks | Eye wrinkle volume about 20% lower than placebo; procollagen type I in skin samples 65% higher |
| Bolke 2019 (drinkable)3 | 72 women aged 35 and over | 2.5 g in a drink with vitamin C, zinc, biotin and vitamin E, 12 weeks | Hydration, elasticity, roughness and density each differed significantly from placebo |
| Hexsel 2017 (nails, no placebo)4 | 25 people with brittle nails | 2.5 g, 24 weeks | Nail growth rate up 12%; broken nails 42% less frequent |
| König 2018 (bone)5 | 131 postmenopausal women, average age 64, with reduced bone density | 5 g, 12 months | Bone mineral density of the spine and femoral neck increased compared with placebo |
| Jendricke 2019 (strength training)6 | 77 premenopausal women doing resistance training 3 times a week | 15 g, 12 weeks | Fat-free mass gain larger than with placebo; both groups gained |
Results as reported by each trial's authors; not a promise of any effect. Several of these trials involved the Collagen Research Institute or collagen suppliers, and the nail study had no placebo group. A 2021 meta-analysis of 19 trials (1,125 participants, 95% of them women) found results in favour of hydrolysed collagen over placebo for skin hydration, elasticity and wrinkles.7
In practice, that gives three sensible amounts:
- 2.5 to 5 g a day matches the skin and nail trials. One capsule-based serving or half a scoop of most powders reaches it.
- 5 to 10 g a day covers the bone density trial and the dose most powders are built around.
- 15 g a day matches the strength training trial in premenopausal women, and is what one scoop of ours gives.
Most trials took 8 to 12 weeks before measuring anything, so judge any collagen over three months, not three weeks. We explain the timelines in how long collagen peptides take to work.
"I ask women to pick one amount and one time of day and stick to it for three months before deciding whether a collagen is right for them. Stirring a scoop into the morning coffee or porridge is the habit that lasts, and I would always rather someone took a modest amount every day than a big amount now and then."

Collagen powder, capsules, liquid or gummies: which is best for women?
Powder is the best value form of collagen for most women because it is the only one that gives 10 g or more in a single serving. Capsules, tablets and gummies suit someone who only wants 1 to 3 g a day, or who will not drink a powder. Here is what each form gave per unit in the products we read:
| Form | Example (brand's own page) | Collagen per unit | Units for 10 g | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Powder | Love Life Supplements Ultimate Collagen Peptides | 15 g per heaped scoop | Two-thirds of a scoop | Unflavoured; dissolves in hot or cold drinks; 0 g sugar |
| Capsules | Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides Capsules | 0.55 g per capsule (3.3 g per 6) | About 18 | $41.00 for 360 capsules; the brand suggests 6 capsules twice a day |
| Tablets | Nutravita Pure Marine Collagen | 0.6 g per tablet | About 17 | Cheapest per pack, not per gram |
| Gummies | Vital Proteins Collagen Gummies | 0.625 g per gummy (2.5 g per 4) | 16 | 1.25 g of added sugar per gummy |
| Liquid | Drinkable ampoule used in the Bolke 2019 trial3 | 2.5 g per ampoule | 4 | Convenient; usually the most expensive per gram, often with added vitamins |
Capsule, tablet and gummy figures from each brand's own product page, read 23 October 2026 (prices re-read 30 October 2026). Liquid figure from the published trial.
If you only want a small amount, 2.5 g in capsules or tablets is a fair match for the skin trials. If you want the 5 to 15 g used in the bone and strength trials, a powder is the only form that gets there without a handful of pills.
Best collagen for women in their 40s, during menopause and over 50
The best collagen for women at each stage is the same product type, hydrolysed peptides at a stated dose; what changes with age is the amount worth aiming for and what else matters alongside it. Skin collagen content falls with time since the menopause rather than with age alone: a London study of postmenopausal women found skin collagen, skin thickness and bone mass all declining by 1 to 2% a year after the menopause,8 and an earlier study found the decline tracked years since menopause, not years of age.9 Taking collagen has not been shown to reverse those changes; the trials below measured specific outcomes over weeks to months.
In your 40s and perimenopause
The skin trials recruited women aged 35 to 65, so 2.5 to 5 g a day is the amount most directly studied at this age. If you also lift weights, the 15 g a day used with strength training in premenopausal women is the trial that fits.6 Protein across the day matters as much as the supplement: collagen counts towards your protein, but it contains no tryptophan and little leucine, so it does not replace meat, fish, eggs, dairy, beans or whey.
During and after the menopause
The postmenopausal bone density trial used 5 g a day for 12 months in women with an age-related fall in bone density.5 It is one trial, run with a collagen supplier, and it is not a reason to change any treatment your doctor has advised. Collagen is a food, not a hormone, so it can sit alongside HRT; we cover that question in can I take collagen while on HRT? Calcium and vitamin D remain the nutrients with authorised claims for bones, and collagen is not a substitute for them.
Over 50 and over 60
For women over 50, look for a powder that gives at least 5 g a serving, because the bone trial and most of the skin trials used 2.5 to 5 g and a powder lets you go higher. Older adults need at least as much protein as younger ones: the UK reference nutrient intake (RNI) for protein is 0.75 g per kg of body weight a day and the US recommended dietary allowance (RDA) is 0.8 g per kg, set by the National Academies and listed by the NIH. A 15 g scoop of ours adds 13.5 g of protein. If swallowing tablets is harder with age, an unflavoured powder stirred into tea, coffee or porridge is the easiest form to keep up.
"For women going through the menopause, I look at the whole plate before the supplement: enough protein at every meal, calcium and vitamin D, and some strength work each week. Collagen can be a convenient extra on top of that, but it works best as part of the routine rather than as the routine."

Sarah's wider guide to collagen across pregnancy and after the menopause is here: collagen peptides for women.
Do women need vitamin C with collagen?
You do not need vitamin C in the same tub, but you do need enough vitamin C in your diet, because it is the nutrient with the authorised claim: vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of blood vessels, bones, cartilage, gums, skin and teeth. Collagen itself has no authorised health claim in the UK or EU. Most women get enough vitamin C from fruit and vegetables; a supplement that includes it makes the daily amount certain.
| Vitamin C reference | Amount for adult women | Who sets it |
|---|---|---|
| UK NHS guidance | 40 mg a day; more than 1,000 mg a day could cause stomach pain, diarrhoea and flatulence | NHS |
| UK and EU label reference (NRV) | 80 mg | Retained Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 |
| US RDA | 75 mg (85 mg in pregnancy, 120 mg when breastfeeding) | National Academies, listed by NIH ODS |
| US upper limit (UL) | 2,000 mg | National Academies, listed by NIH ODS |
| Ultimate Collagen Peptides, per scoop | 200 mg (250% NRV) | Our printed label |
One trial gave 15 g of gelatin with vitamin C before exercise and found a marker of collagen formation in the blood doubled,10 but that tested a different product and setting from a daily collagen powder. More on pairing the two in collagen with vitamin C.
What to look for on a collagen label
A good collagen label tells you five things in plain numbers. If any is missing, compare it with a product that states it.
- Grams of collagen per serving, as its own line in the facts panel. Aim for an amount that matches the trials you care about: 2.5 to 5 g, 10 g or 15 g.
- "Hydrolysed" or "collagen peptides" in the ingredients. Plain gelatine is the same protein but sets in cold liquid.
- The source: bovine, marine (fish), chicken or eggshell membrane. Allergy and diet depend on it.
- Serving size and servings per pack, so you can work out price per serving and per 10 g of collagen.
- Sugar and extras: sugar per serving in gummies and flavoured powders, and the dose of any added biotin, hyaluronic acid or botanicals.
- Testing: a published certificate of analysis, ideally with heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury, arsenic) and microbiology, from an independent lab.
Be wary of a "proprietary blend" that gives one combined figure for collagen and other ingredients: you cannot tell how much collagen it contains. A trademarked ingredient name (BODYBALANCE, VERISOL, Peptan) tells you which supplier's peptides are inside, which helps you match a product to the trial that used them.
How we check our collagen
Every batch of our collagen has a certificate of analysis, and the independent results are published in the lab library on our testing page.
The figures come from Eurofins report AR-733-2026-00087334-03 (July 2026), which also measured proline at 2.35 g against 1.89 g on the label and hydroxyproline at 1.74 g against 1.79 g. Ultimate Collagen Peptides is made in the UK under BRC standards from BODYBALANCE hydrolysed bovine collagen, and the label states 15 g per serving.
Where Love Life Supplements is not the best choice
We sell the collagen on this page, so here is where another product may suit you better.
- Lowest price per gram. Nutravita's bovine powder (£0.38 per 10 g) and NeoCell's ($0.79 per 10 g by tub weight) cost less than ours (£1.09) if you do not need vitamin C or UC-II in the scoop.
- Fish instead of beef. Ours is bovine with chicken-derived UC-II. If you avoid beef, choose a marine collagen. Our own Marine Collagen Skin Boost+ was out of stock when we checked on 30 October 2026.
- Small daily amounts. If 2.5 g a day is all you want, a VERISOL tablet or capsule product matches those trials directly.
- US readers. Ultimate Collagen Peptides is sold on our UK store only and is not available from our US store.
- Vegetarian or vegan. No collagen is suitable. Look for protein-rich foods and vitamin C instead.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best collagen for women over 50?
A hydrolysed collagen powder that states at least 5 g of collagen per serving, because the 12-month trial in postmenopausal women used 5 g a day and a powder lets you take more. Check the source for allergies and the price per 10 g. Ours gives 15 g plus 200 mg of vitamin C a scoop for £1.63 a day on our UK store.
How much collagen should a woman take per day?
The trials in women used 2.5 to 15 g of hydrolysed collagen a day: 2.5 to 5 g in skin and nail studies, 5 g in a bone density study and 15 g with strength training. There is no official intake for collagen in the UK or US, so follow the label and give it at least 8 to 12 weeks.
Is marine or bovine collagen better for women?
Neither has been shown to be better in a head-to-head trial. Bovine gives types I and III and is usually cheaper per gram; marine is mainly type I and suits people who avoid beef. Choose by diet, allergies and price, then check the grams per serving.
Does collagen help with menopause belly?
No trial has shown that collagen reduces belly fat or weight gained around the menopause. The one trial in women that measured body composition gave 15 g a day with strength training three times a week, and both groups lost body fat. Collagen is a protein, so it counts towards your protein intake, nothing more. More in do collagen peptides reduce belly fat?
Are there side effects of collagen peptides for women?
Collagen peptides are generally well tolerated in trials; the most common complaints are fullness or mild stomach upset. Check the source if you have a fish, egg or other food allergy, and ask your GP first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney disease or take regular medication. More in is there a downside to taking collagen peptides?
Is collagen powder or capsules better for women?
Powder, for most women, because one scoop gives 10 to 20 g while a capsule gives about 0.5 g, so reaching 10 g takes around 18 capsules. Capsules suit women who only want 2.5 g a day, the amount used in the VERISOL skin trials.
