Krill Oil Supplementation: The Benefits

What are the Diverse Range Of Benefits Associated With Krill Oil?

For years, researchers have been finding more and more that Omega 3 acids are incredibly beneficial to the body.

With effects that range from the heart to the brain to anti ageing and even PMS, it's something the body needs!

While these oils that produce Omega 3s are naturally found in fatty fish like tuna and salmons, people have become concerned recently with possible toxins that are in the farmed versions of these fish, not to mention the associated costs with eating a high fish diet. Because of that, supplements to replicate that are on the rise. And there's none better than krill oil!

Cardiovascular Health Benefits

A study that was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that krill oil can actually significantly reduce heart-damaging inflammation. This study measured C-Reactive Protein levels in the blood, a way to determine how at risk someone is for heart damage. For people that took at least 300 milligrams of krill oil daily, their CRP levels were significantly reduced.

Brain Function

Researchers at the University of California, Berkley, found that regular consumption of krill oil can improve cognitive function by increasing the body's levels of Omega 3s. Another study that focused on adults with attention difficulties showed a marked improvement in their mental concentration abilities after three months of taking krill oil. Krill oil even contains a very powerful antioxidant called astaxanthin - which rids the body of molecules that can lead to cognitive impairment.

Anti Ageing

When compared to other antioxidants, krill oil has been shown to repair aging cells much better than any other. A value called ORAC, or Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity, is used to show just how effective these antioxidants are.

While something like fish oil brings an ORAC value of around 8, krill oil has a value of a 431! That's over 50 times better. Patients who consumed krill oil daily for three months reported they found a significant improvement in the texture of their skin, nails and hair. What's better though is that they also reported an incredible reduction (about 60%) in wrinkles in their skin.

Cholesterol

A Canadian study found that krill oil helped reduce bad cholesterol levels in the body. In a study of people that are already suffering from high cholesterol, those who took krill oil on a daily basis saw an incredible improvement over those who took just fish oil - up to a 300% difference!

Inflammation

One recent study in the American Journal of Nutrition highlighted just how much of an effects that krill oil supplements can have on chronic arthritis and inflammation. Krill oil supplements reduced patient's pain levels by nearly 30 percent, their stiffness levels by 20 percent, and their lack of mobility by nearly 25 percent! More importantly than that though, was the fact that patients showed significant decreases in symptoms of these conditions in just 7 to 14 days.

PMS

We've already mentioned that krill oil helps with a body's low Omega 3 levels. But did ou know that researchers found a direct link between low Omega 3 levels and severity of PMS symptoms in women? A study in Canada tracked women during times they were suffering from PMS. These women were divided into three groups - those who took krill oil, those who took fish oil, and those who took a placebo. The women in the krill oil group felt less pain compared to the fish oil group. Krill oil even helped with the emotional symptoms of PMS.
